Marika, Norway: Prisoner of the bed

The week before my final week here went almost entirely in bed. With sun shining, birds singing and outside temperature rising above ten degrees it really was the thing I wanted to do! Just wondering, what on earth would have I done here without my computer?

Stortinget metro station

As usual, my days have been going with editing. I’ve also managed to study for upcoming entrance exams, and crossed some things from my to do list that have been there for an eternity.

On Friday I finally got away from the apartment, and went taking photos to the office from a study. It was sunny, my foot felt better, weekend was coming and all the people were in good mood; it was so nice to be outside! After taking photos at the office, I went downtown take enjoy the weather and take even more photos – I had to stop every now and then to sit down, but it really was worth it. And even though my foot hurts a bit more now, again..

Only one week to go, I really cannot believe it! I think I need to come back here in summer, to take back these lost weeks – even if I had full eight weeks to be here and explore the city, it wouldn’t have been enough. And I’m sure Oslo is amazingly beautiful in summer!

Toni, Iceland: Those were the days

Last day so it's time to summarize.

What I love in Iceland is the sense of freedom and passion - you can leave your baby outside a store in a stroller without worrying of some overeager fellow citizen calling to social services or you can go to a cafe/bar (same thing) with your 7 y old son and nobody notices - even if you order a pint of beer. And it's not that Iceland is somehow safer that other countries but they are just not that scared by the media. Driving in Iceland is a pleasure - although road conditions can be pretty hard sometimes. Traffic is not a complete chaos as in Mexico, but it's not the "I have the right according to the law" attitude either. Art is highly valued and small business flourishes e.g. good waiters are hard to find cause so many starts their own business. I also like the way Icelanders value their own country - everything is best in Iceland (best i heimi). Of course it's partly just small mans syndrome, but underneath the bragging there is real respect and humbleness. And Icelanders still protest (in the streets not in facebook) and have strikes - maybe reading books has something to do with it.

The downs - Reykjavik is quite ugly town. Sure there are some nice old houses, but they are buried under the modern architecture which is ok at best, but mainly just over sized phalluses. But it's like all art - where money is scarce beauty can exist. A good example is the opera house Harpa - it's just pompous (look's better inside though - I hope the acoustics are good). The town is not ugly like some Russian suburb (or Kouvola) but it's not far either. The famous Icelandic nature is beautiful but many areas are just endless lava fields and resembles other volcanic islands (just less vegetation). I guess it's different in summer but then everything is even more expensive and more people sharing it (at the same time).

ps. Special thanks to other photographers (Hákon, Sunna and Heiða) at Birtíngur.

Toni, Iceland: NeverEnding Story

Before I starter to work at the magazine I was told that it's gonna last one maybe two weeks. Started my 4th week last monday. Two regular photographers are on leave due to some family matters so there has been plenty of work to do that has kept me busy.

In most of the shootings I only know few things in advance - like what is the story and how many "good" photos are needed. In most of the cases the interview itself is done at different time and in different place or even via the phone. So I have a lot of freedom (= have to improvise a lot without too much time to plan ahead/to shoot) and got some nice supprises too - was kicked out from a Cafe where I had planned to do the shooting, met some difficult personalities, got a parking ticket, but also met some very nice people and had a lot of fun.

I. This was a lifestyle story about a young women who owns a small store. She sells clothing which she has designed by herself. Here are some photos of her wearing her own designs and photos taken in her house.

II. Me and items that I value (need, are important to me). A kind of self written story about the person including story behind the items.

...

...

...

III. A Love Story! - about young dancers who are participating in the show "Iceland got Talent" - they are also dating.

...

...

IV. Childrens opera Hansel and Gretel. Took some shots of the actors before premier and also during it.

Some weekend pictures (shot between the 3rd and 4th hail). Got a nice facial scrupping from the 4th one - salt, ice and water travelling 18 m/s beats cosmetics.

Marika, Norway: Bad news

My sixth week started with bad news; I had to go to see the doctor on Monday, because my foot really wasn’t getting better at all.  I got to shoot a couple of photos before I left the hospital in the afternoon, and happened to arrive there just in the rush time – my luck, of course! After couple of hours waiting, I finally got the news that I had been afraid of: fracture on my right instep’s outer side, and walking with crutches at least a month. Actually the doctor lectured me a bit about walking with only one crutch, but I tried to explain that I need my another hand for camera – she didn’t buy it at all. So, no long walks for weeks, yay!

Couple of photos from earlier weeks, 2/2

It has been very sunny and you can really taste the spring in the air, so it has been such a shame that I need to spend my days inside the house. I’m kind of surprised how not-bored I’ve still got because of loads of stuff to do on the computer; I’ve been video editing (I’m actually kind of getting to like it!) the interview clips from earlier and I’ve actually got time for school stuff too. But I’d still prefer to be enjoying these last weeks in Oslo outside the apartment, photographing and spending time with people I’ve got to know here..

Girls at a meeting

Besides sitting home and building up my very own office to my room, I managed to get the last portraits of Lent’s staff this week. And I also spotted the very first crocuses near Lent’s office too! Spring is really coming, so let’s try to be positive :)

Real evidence of the crocuses!
My greetings to my fabulous luck :D
